Volunteering enables young people to envision and reclaim their place in society. There’s a multiplying force of volunteerism: as young volunteers build self-awareness, self-esteem and confidence, they enact change in their communities and impart skills to others while acquiring skills themselves. Learning by doing, volunteers become proficient in communication, problem-solving, organizing, and planning and benefit from a stronger start to their employment journeys. By mobilising young people to volunteer, we expand our reach, access, and trust with communities, strengthen our ability to deliver on programme and advocacy goals, and provide young people with empowering and upskilling experiences— moving closer to a world in which young people are changemakers shaping more just and equitable outcomes

The purpose of the internship is to develop training materials and facilitate workshops around volunteer engagement for UNICEF while also supporting the team to build connections and coalitions with relevant organizations outside of UNICEF.      

Your main responsibilities will be:

• Supporting training on facilitation of Human-Centred Design (HCD) workshops, with a focus on volunteer engagement, for the African Union Youth Division
• Production of training materials on facilitation of HCD processes around volunteer engagement
• Supporting planning and facilitation of volunteer engagement strategy design workshops
• Producing guidance/tools on volunteer engagement for Country Offices and NatComs

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

• Be enrolled in an advanced/undergraduate university degree (Master’s or higher) in public policy, social science or other relevant field.
• Have a relevant background in volunteer and public engagement work
• Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
• Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Salary/Payment:
UNICEF will provide a small monthly stipend during the duration of this Internship. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship.

Visa Information:

In the event that the fellow is expected to report to NYHQ, United States, they will be responsible for obtaining their G-4 visa before traveling to United States. They will not be permitted to enter the United States without a valid G-4 visa.  UNICEF will only issue guidance and a letter stating acceptance of an individual as an intern/fellow and the conditions governing the Internship/Fellowship.

Insurance:

UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the volunteer’s service. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrollment in a health/accident plan prior to starting his/her work.

Living and Working Conditions:

The internship is on part time basis (30 Hours per week).  In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the GenU office will be working remotely for at least some of this period and we will consider applicants who can only work remotely, keeping NY (EST) work hours.
