There is an exciting opportunity for a remote summer Diverse Voices in Science Journalism (DVSJ) Intern. This 10-week, remote paid internship offers undergraduates interested in pursuing journalism as a career the opportunity to learn multiple facets of science writing. Working closely with editors and reporters in the news department of Science, the largest interdisciplinary science journal in the world, interns will participate in all aspects of the news operation, including online, print, and digital media products.
The internship program is designed for individuals with a deep commitment to extending the reach of science journalism into communities where there is currently limited participation. By training science journalists from, and with a commitment to, diverse communities, the program will help to build the capacity of those individuals to report on scientific issues to a general audience and expand access to the profession to persons including, but not limited to, people from diverse populations.

What You’ll Do
- Report and write for Science’s daily online news site, the weekly print magazine, and various digital media products
- Cover science-related events in and around the Washington, D.C. area, including press conferences and briefings, congressional hearings and other legislative activities, meetings at various federal agencies, and workshops and conferences on a range of scientific topics
Minimum Qualifications
- Must currently be enrolled in an undergraduate university or college program, journalism majors preferred
- A dual major or a minor in a scientific discipline may be advantageous but is not required
- Preference will be given to applicants who have written news articles on scientific subjects or on technical issues. Such experiences include writing for campus newspapers, university publications, radio stations, online publications, and other media outlets, or interning at another news organization
Application Process
- Interested candidates should submit a resume, two news writing samples, and an applicant essay by March 5, 2021
- Writing samples should be examples of journalism or other pieces intended for a general audience—not a class assignment. Stories relating to research or other matters relating to the scientific community are preferred. Please do not include examples of technical writing (i.e. scientific papers). Writing samples should be sent as PDFs or Word files, not as URLs.
- Applicant essay should focus on your diverse voice and commitment to extending the reach of science journalism into communities where there is currently limited participation, experience in journalism, thoughts about science and science writing, how this opportunity will advance your career goals, and include any classes, experiences, affiliations, etc. that you think will make you an ideal candidate for this internship
- Important Note: Two faculty member letters of recommendation are required. Letters of recommendation may be uploaded by the applicant as a part of the online application.
