DEVELOP YOUR DISASTER RISK REDUCTION PLAN: CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

26 July 2021, Hiroshima, Japan – By learning from and sharing with lessons of geological, climatic, and biological hazards in the past, we come to identify risks and measures to mitigate them. Do you and your family have a plan in case of emergencies? What about your community, where you live with people from various backgrounds?

UNITAR Division for Prosperity is seeking motivated learners interested in developing an inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Plan matched to the needs of their communities and countries. Open to all women aged 18 years or over, the three-month online training will build participants’ knowledge on in DRR. Topics will include the Sendai Framework, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), gender responsive DRR, multi-stakeholder coalitions in DRR, community-based DRR, and climate change.

From September to December 2021, participants will complete four sections of learning that combines on-demand mobile learning and interactive webinars. In small groups, participants will develop a DRR plan step by step and share their plans at a final presentation.

The programme targets 100 women living in or from Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs). However, women from around the world are welcome to participate, with the understanding that the material is contextualized to the Pacific Islands. Those who have strong interests in the course or for working in the Pacific are encouraged to apply.

UNITAR Women’s Leadership: A Tsunami-based Disaster Risk Reduction Training Programme for World Tsunami Awareness Day 2021 is supported by the Government and the People of Japan. Throughout the programme, participants will learn about Japan’s experiences and reconstruction efforts from major disasters, including the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami of March 2011.
