The Adam Smith Fellowship is a one-year, competitive fellowship program for graduate students enrolled in PhD programs at any university and in any discipline including, but not limited to, economics, philosophy, political science, and sociology. Adam Smith Fellows receive a stipend and spend three weekends during the academic year and one week during the summer participating in workshops and seminars on the Austrian, Virginia, and Bloomington schools of political economy. It is a total award of up to $10,000 for the year.

The Frédéric Bastiat Fellowship is a one-year, competitive fellowship program for graduate students who are enrolled in master’s, juris doctoral, and doctoral programs from any university and in any discipline including, but not limited to, economics, law, political science, and public policy.
The aim of this fellowship is to introduce students to the Austrian, Virginia, and Bloomington schools of political economy as academic foundations for contemporary policy analysis, policy-relevant academic research, and other applied topics. Fellows will explore how this framework is utilized for a variety of topics (including entrepreneurship, technological innovation, regulation, immigration, natural disasters and military conflicts, and federal and state fiscal policy) during a series of colloquia where they will interact with Mercatus scholars that work on the cutting edge of policy analysis and policy-relevant academic research. It is a total award of up to $5,000 for the year.Â
Eligibility
In order to apply to the Adam Smith, Frédéric Bastiat, and Oskar Morgenstern Fellowships, you will need to fill out an online application that includes:
- A 1-2 page cover letter explaining:
- your graduate school career to date,
- your research and research interest,
- your familiarity with the thinkers associated with the Austrian, Virginia and Bloomington schools of political economy, and
- what you hope to get out of the program.
- A current resume/CV.
- A few short answer questions.
Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate program, from any university and in any discipline, during the academic year of the fellowship.Â
Application Procedure
- Applications for the 2022-2023 academic year must be submitted by March 15, 2022.
- Application review will begin after the deadline and decisions will begin to be announced approximately eight weeks after the deadline.
