The Chinese Language Fellowship Program for Current and Prospective American PhD Students

The Chinese Language Fellowship Program (CLFP) is a nationwide initiative designed to strengthen and support the next generation of American scholars focused on China. The program supports students with a fellowship of up to $50,000 so that they can devote one year to intensive Chinese language training at an institution of the fellow’s choice, generally in China or Taiwan. 

The Chinese Language Fellowship Program is organized by the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) and has been made possible through a generous grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. 

Eligibility

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Be a student in a PhD program, with a focus on China and policy or a current or recent graduate student in a master’s degree program.
  • Demonstrate an intermediate Chinese language ability. The fellowship is NOT intended to help beginner students of Chinese.
  • Desire to advance public policy toward China through improved expertise and understanding, or to contribute to scholarly research and teaching on China in order to develop future generations of China specialists.

Application Procedure

  1. PhD Track (up to $50,000): The PhD track of the Chinese Language Fellowship allows currently enrolled PhD students to participate in a language program of their choice in Taiwan or China for nine months, followed by a two-month summer language program during which fellows will take one-on-one classes.
  2. Prospective PhD Track (up to $40,000): The Prospective PhD track of the Chinese Language Fellowship allows current or recent master’s degree students planning to pursue a PhD to participate in a language program of their choice in Taiwan or China for nine months.
