Application Deadline: March 30, 2024.
Thibi and the Internews Earth Journalism Network’s Environmental Data Journalism Academy prepares passionate environmental journalists in India for careers in data-driven accountability reporting.
The intensive six-month Academy has been created for select journalists to produce in-depth data-driven journalism on critical environmental issues in India. The course, which will run in 2024, is divided into two parts: two months of Fundamentals of Data Journalism online learning, and four months of Advanced Data Storytelling (combination of in-person and remote). The Advanced Data Storytelling phase will provide story mentorships that come with a story production stipend to 15 fellows who completed the Fundamentals phase and successfully pitched a story.
Journalists will work on under-reported data-driven environmental stories, particularly on India’s water resources, that are in the public interest.
Requirements
The Academy is seeking students who:
– Are fiercely committed to in-depth journalism
– Are willing to embrace an inquiry-based approach to reporting
– Are eager to grow as journalists and apply what they learn in the newsroom
– Are problem-solvers who overcome obstacles to report important stories
– Are committed to collaboration, transparency and accountability
Participant Profile
Participants who struggle in the course often:
– Are more interested in collecting certificates than learning and applying new skills
– Have a very specific investigation that they want to pursue for which there is not sufficient data available
– Are daily news reporters and are not passionate about long-form reporting into environmental issues
– Already have a specific approach to reporting and are unwilling to follow a new process
– Do not have a commitment from their newsrooms to incorporate data journalism into the editorial strategy of the newsroom
Benefits
- The cost of the Academy is 100% covered by a grant to Internews Earth Journalism Network from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. Those who complete the Academy and receive a Mentored Story Grant qualify for a $2000 stipend.
To those who successfully complete the Fundamentals of Data Journalism course, which includes passing all assignments and contributing to the Academy story, a certificate will be issued. Those selected for the Advanced Data Storytelling phase which includes the Mentored Story Grant part, will receive $1000 when their pitch is accepted and a certificate of completion as well as $1000 upon publication.
