Rhodes Trust Art for Global Impact Residency Program 2024/2025

Applications are now open for the 2024 Rhodes Trust Art for Global Impact Residency. This residency provides an opportunity for an artist to join the community of the Rhodes Trust for one year as a non residential intellectual exchange project culminating in an exhibition at Rhodes House.  The Trust seeks artists committed to the values and vision of the Trust, with a practice rooted in social justice and/or addressing the most pressing issues in the world today. The artist will work collaboratively with the community for the duration of the residency. The residency will operate on an annual basis. Applications will be invited from the public biannually. In the intervening years the residency will be limited to applicants from the global Rhodes Scholar community. 

Each year the applicants will be asked to submit proposals that respond to a theme. For the first year, the committee have decided the theme to be: Radical Joy

Requirements

  • Open as possible to engage with a wide range of artists, architects, designers and makers at all stages of their careers, and to be understanding of their individual circumstances.

Entrants may showcase paintings, sculpture, drawings, textile, prints or mixed media, digital prints and collaborative artworks, photography.

Entrants entry proposal must be original, the artist’s unaided work.

UK and International applications are welcome. 

Artists must be able and willing to travel to Rhodes House at the beginning of the residency, January 2025, and around the exhibition opening, September 2025.   

The Selectors will be looking for a high-quality self-directing practitioner who will use this new opportunity to best develop their practice. 

Benefits

  • £15,000 (in instalments)
  • Reimbursement for travel and project materials up to £3,000 
  • The artist will be provided with accommodation at Rhodes House in Oxford for two visits: one week at the beginning of the residency, January 2025, and one around the launch of the exhibition, September 2025, for which their travel and accommodation will be provided by the Trust. 
  • An exhibition at Rhodes House in Autumn 2025.
  • Inclusion in and access to online events 

The programme does not include studio space, housing, or travel costs. The Rhodes Trust does not offer visa sponsorship for this opportunity.

RESIDENCY OUTCOMES

Opening Event/Exhibition

The residency will culminate in an exhibition in Autumn 2025 with opening event/s to include a panel discussion which the artist will be invited to take part in.  

Opening Week Workshop

During the opening week of the exhibition at Rhodes House there will be a workshop for the artist to take part in.  

Workshops with Scholars in Residence

There will be opportunities for Scholars in Residence to engage with the artist during the residency for intellectual exchange. 

Digital tutorials

The Artist will be invited to meet the curator and development team regularly online throughout the residency to track progression of artist and residency outcomes.

Digital engagement with active students

There will be the opportunity for the artist to engage with Rhodes Scholars online during the residency.  

Artist Blog on Website

The artist will be invited to contribute regularly to a blog on the Rhodes Trust website during their residency.

Q&A / Interview with Artist

There will be opportunities for Q&As and interviews with the artist with selectors, members of the Rhodes Trust Community during the residency.

Step 1

Once registered, you will be able log in at any time before the deadline to upload your CV and images of your work, and finalise details of your application. This will include:

  • Upload a maximum of 6 images of recent work
  • Upload a maximum of two page A4 CV
  • A brief outline of how your practice is relevant to the values of the Trust and the theme Radical Joy 
  • A brief outline of how you envisage the residency contributing to the development of your practice
  • A brief statement of how you might approach the residency
  • What experience you might have in taking part in a residency.
  • How you will document your residency

Step 3
Following the online selection, a short list of artists will be invited to take part in an interview. This will take place with the selection panel either in person at the
