FCDO Next Generation Economics Competition 2021 for UK students

Application Deadline:21 May 2021.

Welcome to Next Generation Economics, a Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) competition for anyone currently studying in years 10 to 13 (in England and Wales, or equivalent in Scotland and Northern Ireland) who is interested in economics. You do not need to have studied economics to take part. Next Generation Economics is your chance to write about the biggest economic challenges facing your generation in 2021.

The aims of the competition

This competition has 3 aims. We want:

  • to hear your ideas on 2 big economic challenges facing your generation. The FCDO represents UK interests across the world, and our economists are always searching for solutions to the global challenges of climate change and inequality
  • to inspire the next generation of economists. Our competition aims to demonstrate how economics is a vital tool for answering important, urgent questions about the environment and society
  • the next generation of economists to be even more diverse and open-minded than the current generation. We encourage you to enter the competition whatever your background (and however much you know about economics). Find out more about diversity in the economics profession.

Eligibility

To enter, you:

  • must be in years 10 to 13 in England or Wales, years 11 to 14 in Northern Ireland, or S3 to S6 in Scotland.
  • can work on your entry with up to 2 other people in your year group
  • do not need to be studying economics
  • do not need to pay, the competition is free to enter

The entry format

Your entry:

  • must be 800 words or less
  • graphs and graphics are encouraged but not required
  • formatted as a letter addressed to the FCDO’s Chief Economist, Rachel Glennerster
  • written concisely, using core economic concepts to support your arguments
  • must clearly reference any evidence you rely on using the Harvard referencing style. References are not included in the word count

How the competition works

To enter, you must submit your response to 1 of these 2 questions:

  1. Which economic policies should governments introduce to tackle the impacts of climate change on your generation?
  2. Which economic policies should governments introduce to tackle rising global inequality?

Your entry should take the form of a letter to the FCDO Chief Economist Rachel Glennerster and should be no longer than 800 words.

Read the competition rules and send your entry to NextGenerationEconomics@fcdo.gov.uk between 15 February and 21 May 2021. Make sure you include your name, year group, and school. If you do not have access to email, post your letter to:
