The Caribbean Vulnerable Communities Coalition (CVC) and its partners Pan Caribbean Partnership Against HIV and AIDS (PANCAP) and El Centro de Orientación e Investigación Integral (COIN), have received a grant from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS Tuberculosis and Malaria, which will bring together organizations with complementary mandates, technical expertise and constituencies in a harmonized approach to leverage and support the effort of communities, civil society actors governments and technical partners in advancing the regional HIV response. This project provides a unique opportunity to institutionalize partnerships between civil society and governments to achieve and sustain effective programs that meet the needs of key populations (KPs) and reduce the impact of HIV.
The project seeks to achieve the following objectives:
- To reduce structural barriers to key population services including stigma & discrimination and gender-based violence;
- To improve knowledge generation and use of strategic information on key populations for decision-making and advocacy by communities and other stakeholders;
- To increase domestic resources for effective key population programming; and
- To mobilize resources for key population organizations.
The Caribbean Vulnerable Community Coalition (CVC), under this project, is pleased to announce a Request for Applications to provide small grants to Community based organisations (CBO) to support them conducting Participatory Action Research (PAR) to inform their programming with key populations and/or to use this data to support the theory of change of the work that they do with these groups.
Participatory action research involves community researchers and program participants working together to understand a problematic situation and change it for the better. Those to be helped by the research process, determine the purposes and outcomes of their own inquiry.
PAR can create credible and critical documentation at the grassroots level. Not only can the information be utilized to inform service provision, human rights work and advocacy efforts, but CVC has witnessed first-hand how the research process itself can serve to create a network of activists, informing organizations working on issues that impact study participants, and directly benefiting the key population groups that we are part of and serve..
CVC is providing funding to apply the PAR approach to the problems CBOs encounter in their service provision, whether in the area of prevention, care and treatment, human rights, or advocacy. This will present an opportunity not only to find evidence-based solutions, but to involve persons affected in the process, hence raising awareness and empowering the community.
Grants of up to US$5,000 will be made available to eligible CBO’s for a research project of maximum 6 months duration.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
To be eligible to apply for this funding the applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Be legally registered CBO in one of the following countries: Jamaica, Suriname, Belize, Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua and Barbuda, or Guyana.
Note: Unregistered grass roots organisations are able to submit an application if they have a legally registered NGO to act as fiscal sponsor for them.
- Be providing services to at least one of the following groups – Men who Have Sex with Men, Trans women, migrants, sex workers, persons who use drugs or marginalised youth, for at least three years.
- Have identified an experienced lead researcher that can oversee the research project in all its phases, and who will be responsible for the final research report. The CV of the lead researcher should be included in the application package
