We live in urgent times. The recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) continues to intensify
warnings of catastrophic climate impacts. With ever-increasing challenges facing us in the 21st Century, we are
confronted regularly with a need for broader multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches to co-create
new knowledge and enable change collaboratively.
The global climate emergency requires interdependent strategies of sociocultural, technical, educational, and
scientific intervention. Climate change also affects different populations in various ways, with some being
disproportionately impacted. In response to these challenges, we are building a relational research model to
tackle the climate emergency through a cohort-based Collaborative Ph.D. one-year pilot with internships to
This project will provide stipend support for one cohort of Ph.D. students conducting research related to climate
emergency and climate justice. This funding will bring together Ph.D. students from a wide range of disciplines
to work in innovative ways to mitigate the effects of climate change. The program will also afford Ph.D. students
a transdisciplinary environment, internships with partners in industry, government, and civil society (where
appropriate), special courses, and mentorship from internationally renowned interdisciplinary faculty.
All incoming and current Ph.D. students, in any discipline, at UBC are eligible. We welcome students from a wide
range of disciplinary backgrounds and with different methodological and epistemological expertise.
The application package must include a current academic CV, a letter of intent (of no more than 500 words)
highlighting the student’s interest and suitability for the fellowship, unofficial transcripts, and a reference letter
from the current or future UBC supervisor. Applicants will be asked to rank the problems in order of interest and
