About Opportunity

South East Museum Development is part of a larger network of Museum Development providers supported by Arts Council England, designed to support diverse, inclusive and innovative museums that welcome people from all backgrounds.

You can learn about the National MDUK on their website, and take a look at our partners in MD across the regions.

Eligibility Requirements

We are a National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) that receives funding from Arts Council
England (ACE) to provide development support to accredited museums that are not in
receipt of regular funding from ACE or other government departments.
That means our priority is to work with accredited museums (or those formally working
towards accreditation) that are not national organizations, NPO leads, or consortium
partners.
We are aware that many staff and volunteers working in NPO, national, and nonaccredited museums would like to take part in our program. This is possible with
some of our activities if there is the capacity (i.e., the activity is not fully booked).
Training
If there is space available, we allow staff/volunteers/freelancers from all museums to
participate. If the session is oversubscribed, we will prioritize involvement from non-national, non-NPO museums in the region.
Specialist Advice/Surgeries
If there is capacity, we can include participants from national, NPO, and non-accredited
museums from the region. If we are oversubscribed, we will prioritize involvement from
non-national, non-NPO museums in the region.
Project cohorts
If there is capacity, we will include participants from national, NPO, and non-accredited
museums from the region. If we are oversubscribed, we will prioritize involvement from
non-national, non-NPO museums in the region.
SEMD Grants
We have a limited allocation of funding available to offer small grants to our priority
museums in the region that are accredited or formally working towards accreditation.
Therefore, our grants are not available to national, NPO lead, and consortium partners,
and non-accredited museums.
Upon occasion, we form partnerships with other funders. These ‘joint’ grants may have
a different set of eligibility criteria is attached, which will be clearly stated in the Grant
Guidance information we provide on our website.

Application Procedure

While some museums are fortunate enough to have a dedicated team member leading on grant applications, most rely on a range of museum staff, volunteers, and trustees to take on this important task.

We’ve created this Resource Hub to help you on your grant writing journey; whether you are an experienced fundraiser or are putting together your first application.
