Application Procedure

United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2023 is a fully funded UNNF Fellowship organized and funded by the United Nations. The Nippon Foundation Fellowship offers advanced training in ocean affairs and the law of the sea, and allied fields. The fully funded fellowship program includes marine science to support management frameworks. The fellows will gain knowledge of the work of the UN, get familiar with critical challenges and best practices in oceanic affairs. This would not only polish the candidate’s leadership skills but also tow them towards real life problems.

Fellows will also carry out independent study and write a thesis on a subject of their choosing, under the observation of world-class supervisors. Following the international Fellowship, Fellows are expected to return to their home nations and use their experience to help develop ocean policies. The candidates must implement the legal framework outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and related instruments.

Eligibility Requirements

The candidate must be from a developing state

  • The candidate must be between the ages of 25 and 40
  • The candidate must have successfully completed a first university degree
  • The candidate demonstrates a capacity to undertake independent advanced academic research and study
  • The candidate must be a mid-level professional from a national government organ of a developing State, or another governmental or non-governmental agency in such a State, which deals directly with ocean affair issues, and the candidate’s professional position must allow the candidate to directly assist their nation in the formulation or implementation of policy in this area. This includes marine sciences and the science-policy linkage.
  • The candidate’s “Nomination and Recommendation Form” should be completed by a Government official or other official who can attest to the nature of the candidate’s work with respect to the Government’s ocean affairs and law of the sea related activities, and indicate how an Award would directly contribute to these activities
  • The candidate proposed research and study program must contribute directly to their nation’s formulation or implementation of ocean affairs and law of the sea policies and programs
  • The candidate must be free of all non-Fellowship obligations during the entire Fellowship period unless otherwise authorized by the Division.
